THE REMNANTS OF 1948 SEPARATION ACT
In the
error of 1948 South Africa awakened to the news of separation act between black
and white South Africans. The separation marks the beat of every South African’s
heart wherever they are and whenever they are born, the stain of the history is
there in relentless stare. We have since moved on and left our hearts behind
that 1948 moment which flashes vividly like yesterday even to the new-born, the
period that planted a permanent divide between South Africans economically,
educationally and socially. The strides made by freedom fighters and
sympathetic other citizens to erase the stain and culture of that separation
gap can’t be ignored. However, we can’t be ignorant of the plangent hostility
of the underlying remnants of the apartheid history and racial segregation
which now manifests into untimely eruptions in different parts of the country
by proudly unique citizens. The existence of race divisions is undeniable
within the heart of every South African today who are constantly reminded by
attitudes, structures and laws which still play a bigger role in backwardness
of what is supposed to be a new dawn.
The
resistance for every South African opposed to freedom and equality for all is a
potential enemy to the progress of democracy. In the deepest veins of the
resisting heart, lies hate, pride, greed, ignorance and entitlement to
undermine the efforts and wishes of a country free of bigotry. You and I would
have expected that kind of resistance to the age born within the apartheid
period in protection of what they benefitted as a result of apartheid, but no,
it continued into the new generation. As it seems, it is the matter of the
heart not age or experience. There seems be a continuing flow of racism
insemination in the new generation which can only be explained to be in the
interest of protecting privilege. Equality for all turns out to be a threat to
many who have benefitted privilege through the colour of their skin and would
do anything to hang on even if it means being an enemy of the state. Books have
been written, wisdom of the great heroes and heroines shared, new laws
established, formalities of reconciliation were conducted and country declared to
be free of prejudice or hate. Nobody seems to have gone through the stubborn
hearts of men, women and children born and raised to hate. It is the matter of
the heart which South Africa faces today manifesting itself periodically in
public.
The
continuing hate is nothing but apparent emasculation of our hard fought freedom
and rejection of a new dawn which the president of the Republic of South Africa
and peaceful citizens preaches earnestly. Our parliament is the reflection of a
divided society representing different races and interests and why we wonder
upon the demonstrations of racism in our society, if a deciding body of leaders
struggle to separate themselves from it. The parliament of South Africa houses
quite a number of political parties which discusses and defends patronage of
their followers. In ignorance of what is taking place in our parliament, we
expect the society to reflect a different state of the nation apart from their
leaders. It can’t be ignored that, the parliament is the heart of the country
and whatever it presents to the people, it will be a true reflection of where
the country is. The house which decides the order of the country can’t operate
in a disorderly manner and expect the society to demonstrate pretentious version
of unity. Our parliament is the portrait of a heart that divides the country
and as it continues, the society suffers the most. It raises hating children,
and validates acts of racism and permanent divisions in our society. Until the
perspiring hostile engagement in our parliament is dealt with and
representatives become aware of their role as leaders, South Africa will so
long be stuck in an uncertain and critical state. We will continue on the edge
and divide in which the government and goodhearted South Africans would wish to
believe as a distant history. Until representatives of the people immune themselves
and embodies a united front, South Africa remains a victim of the 1948
separation act.
